Fashion & Flat Whites: Pattie De Guzman

Pattie looking beautiful in her playsuit. It was originally a jumpsuit, but she had it shortened and used the extra cloth to create sleeves. Such a great idea!

How long have you been interested in fashion, and what inspired your interest?

I've always loved dressing up, since I was a kid. It helped that my mom allowed me the freedom to choose my clothes (with her guidance, of course!) so growing up, I've been used to expressing my personality with my clothes. My mom is a big factor for my love in fashion. I've always believed that I inherited the fashion gene from her!

Can you tell us about your journey to body confidence?

I'm taller and skinnier than most of my peers, so growing up I often got teased. It didn't help that I was 5'8 in a country where a girl's average height is 4'11 or 5'0, so I received so many unwanted stares and remarks from people of all ages. Pageants are a huge thing in our country, so seeing so many tall girls that aren't only beautiful, but also smart and advocates for important causes, made me feel empowered and made me appreciate my body more.

Seeing so many beautiful women from around the world through the app has widened my perspective on diversity and made me appreciate the beauty of our differences even more.

What's your favorite fashion hack?

My favorite fashion hack is one where I don't need to spend tons of money. I always find ways to reuse clothes! For example, I turned an old jumpsuit into a romper and used the extra cloth to make detachable sleeves. I also love wearing clothes that my mom used to wear when she was my age, it simply shows that fashion is timeless. Fast fashion has also been a common issue so I try to be conscious of my shopping decisions.

What do you hope the future of fashion will look like?

I hope fashion will become more progressive and sustainable. I hope fashion will continue to adapt to the changes in our society and environment.

Loving the design at the top of Pattie’s dress - it almost looks like a cutout, doesn’t it? So pretty!
