Fashion & Flat Whites: Debra Tavona-Dicker

Debra looking radiant in her yellow dress. Yellow is her happy color, and we can absolutely understand why!

How would you describe your style?

“Instinctive”. I have a wide variety of styles to choose from and I will instinctively choose what I feel is best for me for an event. The “event” is anything from a day shopping to a formal night out.

How long have you been interested in fashion?

The love of fashion has always been with me. My husband and I ran an art export business for many years in Zimbabwe, but unlike my husband, my role was not full time. It gave me the opportunity to start up Spunky-D Fashions. I love color and unique styles .

Was there a turning point in your life where you started thinking more creatively when it comes to what you wear and how it makes you feel?

It was an evolution. There wasn’t a flash of light in my head whereby I started thinking more creatively. As I grew older, my fashion sense, style and appreciation evolved as I developed my own style and twist on fashion.

I was taught to love myself, my body and treat it well, because you only get one chance at LIFE!
— Debra

What is your profession, and how does what you wear impact your profession?

For the last 10 years, I have worked in Financial Planning, Wealth Management and Stock Broking. I enjoy color and do not tone down what I wear, but still keep within what I consider professional. Color makes me happy and alive, and the way I dress is my way of expressing my creativity.

Can you tell us a bit about your passions?

Outside of my marriage – fashion is my passion. My husband is a photographer and loves to set aside time for photoshoots. It’s a perfect match.

This dress looks like it was made for Debra, doesn’t it!? So stunning, and love how she’s styled it with her beautiful purple accessories so that the purple pattern pops!

Can you tell us about your journey to body confidence?

I was blessed to have been born and raised by fierce, strong women. “African Queens” who know and believe that WE ARE ALL FEARFULLY AND WONDERFULLY MADE!  I was taught to love myself and my body, and treat it well, because you only get one chance at LIFE!

What's the perfect formula for a feel-good outfit?

If you love it and it makes you happy, wear it. A great outfit boosts your confidence and self-esteem and with that, you can take on the world.

What do you hope the future of fashion will look like?

I hope it looks like a field of brightly colored flowers in all shapes and sizes. It should be inclusive.
