Fashion & Flat Whites: Whitney Leonard

How would you describe your style?

I think my style is classic, for the most part. I love solids, stripes, nothing too wild or bright. I enjoy pieces that can be mixed and matched, dressed up or down, worn to work or out running errands on a Saturday. I also want enough variety in my closet to allow me to be preppy one day, rock-n-roll the next, and super girly on date nights.

How long have you been interested in fashion?

Growing up in the 80s and 90s as a plus sized girl made clothes shopping really sad. I didn’t really get into clothes/fashion until my late 20s and 30s. Shows like Project Runway got me interested in design, construction and the technical side of things. Then as plus sized options expanded so did my interest in what I could wear and how I could dress. My best friend is also really into fashion and style…so she inspired me to up my game too.

What made you join Mys Tyler?

I saw an ad for it and when I saw it took into consideration my body size and type I was curious. When I realized it wasn’t about following “influencers” who have unlimited budgets, traditionally perfect bodies, unrealistic beauty standards, or time and resources that “normal women” just don’t have I was hooked. I want to see women who are my age, who look like me, who shop where I shop. Places like Instagram, Pinterest, or TikTok are great but I can only see so many tall, blonde, rich, freelance content creators living in LA or New York trying on $550 dresses for brunch with the gals before I want to walk into traffic.

What's one thing you would want to tell your 5yo self?

I would want to tell little me that as long as you are doing what makes you happy and fills your life with joy you’ll be doing good. Being kind is more important than being cool. Doing the right thing and being honest is always the best answer. I’d also tell her she’s never going to enjoy soccer or t-ball, so don’t waste two years trying to learn and play…skip right to dance classes.
