Fashion & Flat Whites: Sarah Cohen

Sarah wearing beautiful neutrals. How fabulous are these mesh, puff sleeves?

How would you describe your style?

Bold, bright and loud... like my personality. I don't own any athleisure wear or pajamas, preferring to spend my fashion dollars on sharp shoulder blazers, statement necklaces and anything with a bit of 'drama' in the design.

How long have you been interested in fashion, and what inspired your interest?

I have been in the marketing and PR industry for 20 years, the last 10 spent in luxury fashion and personal styling.

My childhood was spent strolling through premium shopping centers every weekend and holidays because of my father's work in commercial property development (Chatswood Chase, Pacific Fair, etc). I feel more at home in a Westfield Shopping Centre than I do anywhere else in the world! It's my safe space.

What is your profession, and how does what you wear impact your profession?

My company, The Styling Advisory, helps personal stylists, personal shoppers and image professionals from all over the globe develop a profitable business and marketing strategy. We also co-run an AICI accredited Virtual Styling Business Program called 'Going Virtual - The Ultimate Program For Global Styling Success' with leading image training institution The Style Core, helping content creators like the Mys Tyler community monetize their work. Lastly, I have the top rated fashion show, The Styling Advisory Podcast, featuring interviews with the world's most successful personal stylists to help listeners learn about the marketing tactics that worked for them.

What I wear needs to inspire my styling clients to show up as the BEST version of themselves. We are in an industry that celebrates fashion, color, composition, fabrics and patterns, so I am always dressing in outfits that show people who I am and what industry I'm in.

Can you tell us about your journey to body confidence?

I would say it's a work in progress. Whilst I don't tend to wear particularly revealing outfits or bodycon dresses, I like to make sure my personality is represented in my clothing. So it's less about being 'body' confident' for me and more about finally being 'holistically confident' in who I am, and taking up space.

How did you find out about Mys Tyler?

I was a part of Mirvac's Spring Fashion Campaign, interviewing Mys Tyler fashion contributors in various centers about style. Sarah (Mys Tyler’s Founder & CEO) and I met at the events and had a fabulous conversation about body positivity on my podcast. Listen now here!

How has using Mys Tyler impacted you?

I love getting an instant idea of how my favorite brands' clothing looks on my body's shape, and more importantly, where the garments sit or how they are styled on someone like me. It's a more personal and relevant lookbook of outfit ideas for me!

This stunning look definitely represents Sarah’s style - bold, bright, and loud - in all the best ways!

What’s your favorite fashion hack?

Over Covid in Melbourne I learned how to amp up my Zoom looks with a few simple items. When in doubt, a Zara blazer in a bold color can instantly brighten your look. OR, a completely neutral palette with a statement necklace.

Portmans is an extremely underrated source of items that look high fashion without the price tag.

If you know your fabrics, you can find quality garments in any store, not just the high end brands. From cotton tees to linen pants and suit jackets, if you know your fabrics and you know exactly what cuts/styles flatter your shape, you can hunt down a quality staple like a truffle pig in the forest.

What’s the perfect formula for a feel-good outfit?

Always, always a sharp shouldered blazer, straight neck singlet at the moment (to mirror the lines and angles of my body) and this denim mini I found in Portmans that people assume is from AJE.

What do you hope the future of fashion will look like?

I hope everyone works with a personal stylist to understand the colors, cuts, patterns and styles that look incredible on them, for their age, lifestyle, coloring and personality. Having us all shop the same collection is insane -The colors, cuts and styles a brand releases for the season will only ever suit a very small portion of the population at one time.

And the rest of us buy the stuff anyway, feel unattractive in it and then shove it to the back of our closet.

When you understand the science behind silhouettes, proportion, harmony and color theory, shopping and dressing becomes the simplest process, and you look fabulous. Without this knowledge, we are shopping blind, repeatedly making poor choices, wasting our money and throwing tons of clothes into landfill.

One can never go wrong with a camel blazer and a statement necklace, just as Sarah describes!
